Preparing students for the green transition is one of the key aims of European educational policy as stated in the European Commission’s Communication on Achieving the European Education Area by 2025 (2020). However, while the integration of ESD in curricula is already well advanced, its practical implementation remains insufficient, often due to a lack of concrete instructional strategies. In this expert interview, Prof. Dr. Alexandra Budke (University of Cologne) emphasizes the importance of a multi-perspective approach, the inclusion of controversial discussions, and the development of innovative problem-solving strategies to effectively engage students with sustainability issues. Prof. Dr. Alexandra Budke is an expert on geography education at the University of Cologne.
